Henry Clay Frick acquired this Orchestrion in 1892. The Orchestrion is a freestanding mechanical instrument that imitates orchestral music; ours replicates nine instruments and has over 200 pipes. First placed in Clayton's parlor, its weight (approx. 3,000 pounds) caused the floor to sag; the Orchestrion was then moved to the porch, which was enclosed to protect it. A musical status symbol and showpiece of the Fricks' newly enlarged home when installed, the Orchestrion remains a unique feature of Clayton.
