Gold, silver, enamel Founded by Pope Pius IX (1792-1878) on 17 June 1847 in memory of the Pian Knights Order, established in 1560 by Pius IV (1499-1565) and cancelled in 1565. The order is awarded for outstanding merits for Church and society. Motto: VIRTUTI ET MERITO – «Virtue and Merits»
