Award established in may 1920 the Council of people's Ministers of Ukrainian National Republic (Ukrainian state with its capital in Kiev, which in 1917-1920 existed in the place of the South-Western provinces of the Russian Empire).
The right to receive the order were soldiers of the UNR army, who took part in the winter hike in December 1919 - May 1920, against Denikin and the Soviet Bolshevik armies.
On the reverse of the order embossed dates of the campaign and the inscription: ЗА ЗИМОВИЙ ПОХІД І БОЇ - "For a winter campaign and battles".
The first order was made in Warsaw, medal ribbon - in Lviv
