Established in 1802 by the First Consul of French Republic Napoleon Bonaparte. On July 15, 1804, when Napoleon became the emperor, the first awarding was held. Several types of order insignias exist. Changes were developed in accordance with changes in the political situation. After Napoleon’s fall, King Louis XVIII did not cancel the award, but merely changed its appearance. The eagle on the reverse was replaced with three royal lilies
