A variety of face markings evolved on clubs. The caddy would rough up the face with emery paper or markings could be hand made with a sharp tool. New clubs came from the makers with machine markings in a variety of patterns with many makers stamping their own motifs onto the irons. These cleek marks are useful aids for identifing and dating early clubs.
