This first section of the exhibit focuses on how the early women’s movement was about far more than the vote. The first formal women’s rights convention held in 1848 focused on rights for married women. Its goal was to secure rights that were already exercised by unmarried women, such as the right to inherit property. By speaking in public and arguing against slavery, women challenged the idea that they only belonged in the home.
