The Coal Mines Act of 1911 made it compulsory for rescue teams to serve mines during times of accidents. Under this same Act, any mine employing more than 100 men had to have a rescue station located within ten miles. By 1918, 43 stations had been established across Britain.

There were 3 stations in the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire area: Chesterfield, Mansfield and Ilkeston. The team pictured are the Ormonde Colliery Rescue Team, who worked out of the Ilkeston Station.
