Long metal ornamental pins with large square or round heads were used to attach garments to each other. But they also possessed ritual significance, and they may have played a role in the symbolic sealing of marriages. In the mountainous regions of Iran, the bride’s parents still present a pin to the parents of the bridegroom to this day, in confirmation of the marriage.
