The collection of ornamental diatoms of Ernesto Caballero and Bellido is the best in Spain and one of the largest in the world. During the nineteenth century, European and American upper classes competed to form collections with the most perfect and beautiful preparations of diatoms that were then exhibited in their living rooms with huge microscopes for their guests to enjoy.
