A burgundy curtained bedroom scene is dramatically lit from the right of the canvas by a flame (the candle is obscured by drapery). The dying figure of Desdemona falls from her bed, her head and right arm dangle from the mattress--one breast is exposed. The figure of Othello is upright and in a position of retreat. His head is turbaned and his expression is of shock (eyes wide and one arm over his heart the other raised in the air). He wears an embroidered coat and a jeweled knife sheath is attached to his belt
