Ottavino square piano

Antonio Battaglia1778

Sforzesco Castle

Sforzesco Castle
Milan, Italy

This specimen is the oldest known Milanese piano to date. It is a typical square piano with key stroke mechanics that cause the direct ascending action of hammers, besides two specific devices: pizzicato and risonanza. The former modifies tone-colour by dampening the strings near the nut; the latter allows to raise the dampeners, thus prolonging the sound produced by hammer percussion. Antonio Battaglia is also known for his extensive production of psaltery, two of which are preserved in the same collection at the Sforza Castle.
