For tens of thousands of years Homo neanderthalensis has shared Europe with our species, Homo sapiens; then, about 30 thousands of years ago got extinct without leaving any descendants (so it seems). But his memory is still conserved inside us: our DNA is, in fact, for the most part shared with his. He’s our closest hominin cousin.
