Large central panel of an altarpiece made, by the most qualified Antwerp painting
workshop, for the then newly founded church of the Madre de Deus Monastery in
Lisbon (1509). The seven other smaller paintings that surround the central painting
represent tragic episodes from the life and passion of Christ witnessed by Mary,
thus referred to as His “seven pains”. The monumental figure of the Virgin in blue
would focus the eye of the believer on the altarpiece.
