The Cidade de Goiás was enrolled on the World Heritage List in 2001. The city constitutes a remarkable example of urban center with European features admirably adapted to climatic, geographical and cultural conditions of the central area of South America, and exemplifies the conquest of Brazilian territory beyond the Tordesillas. Despite the economic lethargy, the 19th century was of great cultural expression, with artists like the maestro Veiga Valle, the greatest sculptor from Goiás, author of beautiful religious statuary and the confectioner Cora Coralina, born in 1889, who became in the 1970s a writer and poet revered throughout the country.
