Postmaster David C. Owen, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, patented the Owen-style or 'drop bottom' style mailbox in 1911. The hinged bottom of these boxes made it faster and easier for mail carriers to remove pieces of mail. A.O. Smith Company of Milwaukee initially manufactured the boxes.
