Exeter, United Kingdom

The subject of this painting is the small cabin used by Judith Ackland and her partner Mary Stella Edwards as an artist’s studio from 1924 until Judith’s death in 1971.

The cabin was a former 19th century fisherman’s store with panoramic views out across Bideford Bay. A grade II building the cabin was passed to the National Trust in 2004. It is preserved exactly as it was left 30 years ago. Each year the Trust offers an artistic residency at the cabin.
