Key piece dating from February 23, 1168 when Master Mateo was granted a lifetime pension of 100 maravedis a year by Fernando II of León and Galicia.
This is the first explicit reference to Master Mateo, "who possesses the primacy and mastery of the works of Santiago Cathedral." It was the first of the works that would complete the Romanesque cathedral and the construction of the Portico of Glory (the pinnacle work of European art at that time), its external facade, and the stone choir.
