In 1955, Hung-tu Tseng filed a patent for his Multi-Ring Bubble-Producing Toy. Tseng explained that this invention "relates to toys, and, more particularly, has reference to a toy adapted to produce a multiplicity of bubbles, through the provision of a plurality of pivotally connected members each provided with a ring at one end thereof, with said rings being spread apart in one position of the members, so that, on waving of the toy in the air, bubbles are produced by several rings simultaneously." J & T Toy named Tseng's invention "Magi Fan," and introduced it to the marketplace in the late 1950s. An advertisement for the toy touted "makes millions of bubbles without blowing!" and "the most exciting bubble toy ever!"
