Padmapani Avalokitesvara

Mahendra Dongol2004

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan

This painting is based on works of Anandamuni Shakya, who is said to be the first artist to have adapted the Western realistic expression to Paubha paintings. While Anandamuni painted in monochrome, Mahendra Dongol used bright colors against black background. Moreover, while Anandamuni did not decorate the halo, Mahendra added small decorations to it. The large necklace reaching the knee and the earrings are accessories peculiar to the Newari people. By incorporating new elements to existing works, Paubha artists often create their unique style as shown in this work.
