This suit is for a pageboy. It is associated with Sir Basil Henriques who, aged six, accompanied the Lord Mayor of London in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee procession on 22 June 1897.
Pages had a unique pattern of uniform. Those attending members of the aristocracy had clothing in the colours relevant to their master's livery, only Pages of Honour to the Royal Household had Coats of scarlet and gold. They also wore a sword with a pommel of a horse's head, a design in modern times distinct to their group.
This costume was passed to the wearer's great-granddaughter who subsequently made it available to Historic Royal Palaces.
