The Painted Desert Inn, perched on the edge of the colorful badlands in Petrified Forest National Park, once served as a restful stop for Route 66 travelers crossing northern Arizona. Originally built in the 1920s and remodeled by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the inn offered meals, lodging, and stunning desert views. Though it no longer hosts overnight guests, it now serves as a museum, preserving the art, architecture, and roadside spirit that defined the golden age of Route 66.
