In this painting by Danish artist Niels Simonsen (1807–85), a postilion blows a post horn to signal departure: the express mail coach is about to leave. A latecomer, surprised by the post horn in the middle of his meal, is directed to the departing express mail coach. Simonsen's painting not only describes the express mail's punctuality, it also conveys the idea of a completely liberal mode of transport, without regard for the rank and eminence of its passengers.
