James Monroe's remains were exhumed from his New York City grave in 1858 for reinterment in Virginia. After the exhumation, the former president's body lay in state at New York's City Hall, where thousands of people came to pay their respects. According to family tradition, Monroe's grandson, Samuel L. Gouverneur, Jr., commissioned this painting while serving as the first American consul to Foochow (today Fuzhou), China. He is depicted at the head of the line to the right of the casket.
