Painting of Kirkstall Abbey

1743

Leeds Museums & Galleries

Leeds Museums & Galleries
United Kingdom

This is an oil painting from the late 18th century, probably painted before the partial collapse of the church tower in 1779. Here Kirkstall Abbey is pictured from the east, with the sun in the south west, making it mid-afternoon.

Although the painting needs some conservation work to full restore the image, we can still make out the depiction of animals in the foreground, and a woman to the right of the picture.
