The scene, set in an interior space with a landscape background, is centred on the high priest, who approaches Jesus, while Joseph, the Virgin and other figures witness the event. This is a sketch or replica of a canvas painted by Federico Barocci in 1590 for the church of the Confraternita del Nome di Gesù in Pesaro, now in the Louvre.
