This portrait by Georg Barlösius (1864–1908) shows Heinrich von Stephan as State Secretary of the Reich Post Office in gala uniform, with sash and medal. This regalia indicates the international social position of von Stephan, who received numerous national and international awards and titles. The globe in the background is reminiscent of von Stephan's outstanding role in international postal reform and the founding of the Universal Postal Union as well as the worldwide activities of the Reichspost in the colonial regions.
The three-quarter-figure portrait was painted in 1897, likely to mark the death of Heinrich von Stephan on April 8.
Georg Barlösius made a name for himself in Berlin, not so much as a portraitist as much as a creator of book and calendar illustrations. He also made murals and stained glass windows.
Heinrich von Stephan's gala uniform is still part of the Post and Telecommunication collection of the museum foundation.
