Fluted Doric columns on rectangular pedestals molded with classical motifs form the main structures of this pair of candlesticks. Winged figures and male nudes participate in the design by holding drip pans and candle sockets in their outstretched arms.

In 1832, the celebrated Bolognese designer Filippo Pelagio Palagi was selected by King Carlo Alberto of Savoy to redecorate a number of rooms in several of his palaces. The formal style of these candlesticks is in keeping with other metal objects and furniture designed by Palagi, so scholars assume that these pieces originally formed part of the decor of one of palaces.
