Detachable pockets worn at the waist were at their most popular during the eighteenth century but continued to be worn into the early twentieth century. This very decorative pair would have been worn on the outside of garments rather than underneath clothes as in previous periods. Attached to a belt, they are similar in shape to the then fashionable chatelaine purse.
