The Pakhawaj, a barrel drum, is an ancient instrument of Indian origin, related to the Mridangam popular in South India. Until the 18th century, the Pakhawaj was the standard rhythmic accompaniment to Hindustani music and Kathak dance, thereafter losing its place to Tabla. The Dhrupad genre, however, remains loyal to the Pakhawaj as the standard accompaniment. In recent years, the instrument has become popular in solo presentation, and as a participant in cross-cultural/ fusion ensembles.
