London, United Kingdom

Advertising fan with wooden sticks and guards furnished with paper advertisements.
The double paper leaf is printed on the recto with three cartouches with sprays of flowers; Chemins de Fer de l’Ouest in large red letters at the top. In addition to publicising the train company’s various travel routes and ticketing options, the outer cartouches – adaptions of poster designs by PAL – also promote the services of the printer, P. Dupont. The date and edition are recorded on the right hand edge: ‘1em Edit. On Mai ’98. 10,000 Ex.’
The verso is printed with a medley of 21 advertisements laid out according to stylistic conventions of the period: the leaf being partitioned vertically and horizontally into a series of segments of varying sizes, each containing an advert for a particular product/brand. The layout is such that even the narrowest slivers of space contain advertising inscriptions.
