Palace of Pond, Royal Gardens in Seville

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida1910

Madrid, Spain

A work where Sorolla started his garden paintings which would later become some of his most important works. The painter chose a corner in the Palace of Pond at the Royal Gardens in Seville where the sensation of intimacy and tranquillity are accentuated. The slightly slanted point-of-view and decentred, partial photographic framing contribute to this. The focus of the painting is water and the reflections produced by the white walls and plant pots around the edge. The biased light illuminates the pots, the edge of the pond and the bush to the right, establishing a play of contrasting light enriching the purplish reflection in the water. The Royal Gardens in Seville attracted the artist and many of its corners inspired those in his gardens in Madrid, the present Sorolla Museum.
