The building, originally designed by engineer Antônio Paula Freitas in 1880, served as the Palace of the States during the 1908 National Exposition. It was adapted to house the representations of the different states of the federation. Notable features include the triangular pediment on the façade, symbols of both the Monarchy and the Republic, and sculptures of two lions and eagles. Today, the building is home to the Institute of Mineralogy
