Palenque is one of the top destinations of Chiapas and one of the best examples of Maya architecture in all of Mexico. The Palace of Palenque was probably the ceremonial and administrative centre of the city in the 7th and 8th centuries AD.

This exquisite relief is located on the vault of the west corridor of the subterranean building on the south of the Palace in Palenque, Mexico. It depicts the maize god surrounded by an aquatic environment and flora, probably depicting the moment when he enters the waters of the underworld after his death. The object is a 19th century cast from the original, part of the Maudslay Collection at the British Museum.
