Painted in the early 20th century by Albert Moulton Foweraker (1873-1942), this watercolour study depicts a scene in the city of Palma, Majorca. Offset by his signature bright blue for the sky, the work’s subdued colour palette evokes the warmth of this Spanish street. To the left of the image, a series of figures walk along a path next to a row of white buildings. The dusty path curves around the foreground, framing a grassy square to the right. Signed ‘A M Foweraker’ to the lower left. The sheet is mounted.
Foweraker was a painter from Devon, having studied at Exeter Cathedral School and both Cavendish College and Christ’s College, Cambridge. In 1898 he took up art professionally and exhibited regularly at the Royal Society of British Artists. The present work was produced during a period when Foweraker was living in Cornwall and travelling frequently to Spain. It is one of many works he painted on these travels.
He was also a prolific local artist, painting many landscapes and local scenes from Devon, Cornwall and Dorset, where he lived from the mid-1920s. Foweraker curated an exhibition of works by modern painters at Exeter, which developed into the Devon and Cornwall Fine Art Society.
