These screens are thought to have been produced in the later years of Takashima’s life. Pairing an old pine tree with young bamboo, as he has done here, is an auspicious combination traditional to zuishōga paintings. The remarkable precision and accurate detail in the rendering of the pines’ roots and the bamboo leaves demonstrate Takashima’s level of knowledge of natural science, distinguishing him as a rare and exceptional artist.
