Thunderbirds are powerful manitous or spirits who dwell in the upper world beyond the sky in the Great Lakes region. Their flapping wings and flashing eyes create thunder and lightening. They bring the rains that make the earth fertile and can bestow other blessings on human beings. In contemporary First Nations art Thunderbirds are often portrayed as protectors of humans.
