The Formal Garden was largely complete by April of 1906, but Edwin Lutyens was to return to Hestercombe before long to extend it 88 yards (80 m) to the east. He completed this £2,000 commission between 1906 and 1907 creating, in the process, the Raised East or Dutch Garden and his celebrated ‘Wrennaissance’ slate and hamstone Orangery ‘which will be fun to build & good to look at’.
