Paper dolls of the mid-19th century showcased the latest in stylish fashion and feminine comportment. Magazines for women and for children and some newspapers offered pages of paper dolls for young readers. Manufacturers promoted their products with paper dolls that served as trade cards. When chromolithography produced paper dolls of vibrant colors, the toy became even more popular in the 20th century, especially the dolls made of the new celebrities of movies, radio, and television. "The Partridge Family," a TV series that aired in the early 1970s, presented the adventures of a family that worked as a rock band. Teen heart throb David Cassidy and pretty Susan Dey captured the teen audience, while seasoned music-and-dance star Shirley Jones as the Partridge Family's mom led credibility to the family enterprise. The Partridge Family produced a number of songs performed on the show that, when released on albums, became hits on the pop charts. David Cassidy also enjoyed fame and celebrity as a solo artist on albums and single hits, while Susan Dey collected fans herself. "The Partridge Family" was Dey's first acting job. Before TV, she worked as a model; exhibiting fashions by Kate Greenaway, as Dey does in this paper-doll book, seems like a good fit.
