In the 1970s series "Welcome Back, Kotter," viewers followed the ups and downs of the boys of fictional James Buchanan High in Brooklyn, NY, and their teacher, Mr. Gabe Kotter. He had returned to his alma mater to teach the class of remedial students referred to as “Sweathogs.” As a former remedial student and founding member of the Swethogs, Kotter sought to stimulate their potential. The Boston TV station affiliate did not air the first four episodes of the show due to racial tensions in the city; Boston had implemented a busing system to desegregate public schools and the mandated desegregation led to a series of riots. The local affiliate station had expressed concern that a sitcom depicting an ethnically diverse classroom might stoke the flames. “Welcome Back, Kotter” led to a number of toys and games, and the characters had a number of catch phrases such as “you your nose with a rubber hose,” “g’head….g’head,” and “ba ba ba…ba barbarino!”
