The comic strip and cartoon series Popeye earned fame as one of the earliest and most successful multimedia cartoons. The inventor, cartoonist E.C. Segar, died in 1938. After that, his assistant Bud Sagandorf kept the series alive until 1986, when other cartoonist took over the dynasty. During Sagendorf's era, he also designed toys based on the Popeye characters. The New York firm Jaymar produced many of these wooden figures during the 1930s. It appears they still made paper examples, such as this "Funny Face Maker" toy, in later years. Toymaker Louis Marx's father, Jacob Marx, founded Jaymar Toys along with Louis's brother and sister. The firm ended production during the 1990s.
