José Herculano Stuart Torrie de Almeida Carvalheis was born in Vila Real, on the 7th Marcho f 1887 and died in Lisbon on 1961. Nicknamed the Bocage of illustration and an eclectic author: photographer, filmmaker, performer, decorator, caricaturist, painter, costume designer, set designer, illustrator, advertiser, he also produced posters. Was one of the most brilliant Portuguese cartoonists. Apprentice in the tile workshop of Jorge Colaço, and it was by his hand that he reached the humorous supplement of O Século, where he published his first works. Other experiments followed, such as: Ilustração Portuguesa, A Voz da Juventude, A Garra, O Zé and A Sátira. Connected himself to modernism and was co-founder of the Portuguese Society of Humorists. He also collaborated with A Lanterna and O Pardal, before leaving for Paris, in 1913, for a short period, where he achieved a rapid success.
