At the time of Partition, Paramjit Kaur Dhanoa was a third year student at the King Edward Medical University in Lahore. From March 1947 onwards, she saw violence erupt around her hostel located at the center of the city in Anarkali Bazaar. After Partition's announcement in August, she considered migrating. Along with three friends she briefly moved to Patiala and returned to Lahore when conditions seemed safer. In August 1947, they went to Mukhtsar, where they stayed with Mrs. Dhanoa's grandparents for about a month.

One day, the four girls learned about a truck that was going to Amritsar and they decided to migrate together. Mrs. Dhanoa recalls that everybody in the bus was standing as there was no place to sit. After a brief stay at Ludhiana, they decided to travel onwards to Jalandhar where Mrs. Dhanoa believed her father was posted. They reached Jalandhar cantonment via Wagah border after three days on a train. There were thousands of people standing outside the cantonment area. Mrs. Dhanoa learned that her father had been appointed as an Allotment Officer of Property in Jalandhar. Her three friends were also reunited with their respective families.

Mrs. Dhanoa soon joined Amritsar Medical College, and later PCMS in Himachal Pradesh. In 1953 she married a doctor in the Army, and in 1956, joined the army as a doctor as well. Since Partition, Mrs. Dhanoa has visited Lahore once with her friends.
