It is interesting to see that the more one tries to explain Mexican art at the first half of the XX century as an artistic expression of the Revolution, and thus, perhaps a captive of a dogmatic intention, the more one sees the contrast that, for the most part, Mexican painting came from a deep lyric and introspective vein. It is interesting that the artists, the more they were committed to a social awareness and political position, have been in general, spokesmen of a subjective look at reality in Mexico; think of the utopic vision of Diego Rivera but also the humanism of Orozco and in the uncomplicated poetry that can be found in an artist like Alfredo Zalce, who having been an active member of LEAR - League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists - allowed himself to deal with more minor matters, perhaps intrascendental but which, in contrast, provide artistic excercise challenges such as the dark gray palette, with soft pastiness, which was used in this version of the Paricutin volcano, contrasted with the dynamic explosion of Dr. Atl.
