In 2005, the art and design collective Rebar Studio in San Francisco (USA) proclaimed for the first time the "Park(ing) Day". Since then, it takes place every year in different cities around the world during a day in September. On this day, participants occupy parking lots in the city. The campaign draws attention to the fact that the parking lots could be used for other human needs than parking cars.
