This perennial herb, in the family Saxifragaceae, grows up to 40 centimeters tall.
The plants occur in swamps, peatlands, moist woods.
The basal leaves have rounded to oval blades borne on long petioles and leaves on the stem are heart-shaped and clasp the stem at their bases.
The inflorescence is a solitary flower with five white petals which have light green venation, flowers between July and September.
