Like many other lavishly decorated pieces of jewellery featuring animal motifs, the precious parrot pendant was probably created in Augsburg shortly after the mid-16th century. The parrot is regarded as a symbol of the Virgin Mary and thus as an expression of female virtues. Iconographically, the snail and the white rabbit accompanying the magnificent bird are also associated with Mary.
