This French passport, signed by Victor Louis Charles de Riquet, Duc de Caraman, whom Louisa Catherine Adams had known when she lived in Berlin during John Quincy Adams's diplomatic service there. The passport identifies Louisa as the wife of the U.S. minister to the Russian emperor. She presented the passport in Strasbourg, where it was stamped by a customs officer at the town hall on 19 March. Published in Diary and Autobiographical Writings of Louisa Catherine Adams, 1:xv.
