Pastoral Scene

Gillis Peeters the ElderC.1642

Musée Bertrand
Châteauroux, France

Gillis Peeters was a master of the guild of Avers in 1634.
In collaboration with his brother, Bonaventura I, he made 24 maps representing the siege of the battle of Calloo, which are now kept in the Anvers museum. At the end of his life he continued to paint storms and naval battles. He also made a handful of landscapes, many drawings and engravings.
The brush work by Gillis Peeters depicts with great care this woodland landscape. He emphasizes the intricate branches of trees, cuts out foliage and dwells on the smallest details of lush and contrasting vegetation. However, you will notice that as a true landscaper, he is less skilled in the representation of these characters, which he painted very quickly.
Probably made around 1640, this work is part of this set of Flemish landscapes which clearly influenced the Dutch conception of this pictorial genre.
From the texts by Sandrine Le Bideau in the catalog Flemish and Dutch paintings—Collection of the Châteauroux museums (Peintures Flamande et Hollandaise—Collection des Musées de Châteauroux) Somogy-Editions d'Art.
