Patch, Mission, Buzz Lightyear, Student-Designed

This design for a Buzz Lightyear mission patch won a contest to create a mission patch design for the flight to the International Space Station (ISS) by the fictional character. In 2008, NASA and Disney/Pixar collaborated on a joint educational initiative to fly a Buzz Lightyear space ranger toy to the ISS as a part of NASA's established "toys in space" educational program, while granting NASA permission to use the trademarked character in on-line educational lessons about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). After the completion of the flight, Disney Parks announced a public contest for students to design a "mission patch" that illustrated the toy's flight: the Buzz Lightyear Mission Patch Design Challenge.In 2010, Adam Carr, then 11 years old, won the contest with this design and his short 100-word statement about spaceflight, earning his family a trip to Walt Disney World Resort and a tour of NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.Adam Carr and his father James donated a copy of the patch to the Museum in 2014.
