Luman L. Chapman's 1863 patent for a new corset design is better described as a bust supporter. Chapman's description of the garment noted its fabric "breast puffs" and "elastic shoulder-brace straps." The style was intended as a more comfortable alternative to traditional corsetry that eliminated friction between the fabric and the wearer's skin.
